CK Martial Hearts FAQ

We get emailed a lot of questions with regards to our Shaolin Temple Experiences.

Listed below are some of the most commonly asked ones. Click one of the tabs to read the answer.

Yes. Our programs are held inside the actual Shaolin Temple, located in Henan Province, considered to be the birthplace of formalised Chinese kung fu and Zen Buddhism.

Daily kung fu training takes place inside the temple walls, while accommodation is in the nearby village of Wangzhigou, 10 minutes walk from the temple gate.

More information on where we train, how we get there, and the surrounding area, can be seen here.

Our programs are designed for anyone with an interest in Chinese life, kung fu or culture. You don’t need any martial arts experience, a certain fitness level, or even need to speak Chinese!

And if you do, these programs are just as suitable. The monks can adjust their teaching styles, so if you already have experience, you can get even more out of the time you spend there. The only requirement is that you are respectful of temple life, are prepared for disciplined instruction, and are committed to giving 100% effort during your time at the temple.

And if you’re a teacher, please Contact Us about special group discounts.

No. You don’t need any previous experience in kung fu. This course is designed to be accessible to everyone, no matter what their previous martial arts experience.

In order to ensure the best possible experience for all our participants, on our 1 and 2-week programs, CK Martial Hearts limits groups to 10 people.

All students must be at least 14 years old. However, those under 17 must be training with a parent or guardian.

Our training programs offer a variety of study and experience opportunities, including at least 7 hours every day of Shaolin kung fu and taichi.

Programs also include options for sightseeing visits to places of interest in the surrounding scenic areas, meditation and daily qigong practice.

Full program itineraries and details can be seen here.

Our programs are open to everyone, no matter their health or current fitness level. However, students should be aware that these programs are demanding, both physically and mentally.

In 2017, CK Martial Hearts will be running 1 and 2-week programs, together with our Shaolin Temple Walking Tours, in May and September.

Exact dates for 2017 can be seen here.

While far from an exhaustive list, we can recommend you bring;

Comfortable, loose clothes for training in
Comfortable shoes suitable for martial arts training (such as plimsolls/Feiyue)
Any snacks you can’t live without

At this time, our company doesn’t offer insurance for this program. If you don’t have medical insurance, you will be expected to sign a waiver before being allowed to start the program.

Meals (breakfast, lunch and dinner) will be taken in the Shaolin Dormitory dining hall in Wangzhigou. The food is simple, light Chinese fare, including mantou (steamed buns), eggs and congee for breakfast and noodles and a variety of vegetable, meat and tofu dishes for lunch and dinner.

If you have special requirements regarding food, it may be possible to cater for them, but please let us know as early as possible.

During the day, there is a doctor on duty at the temple, who can take care of any immediate minor problems. For more serious situations, large hospitals are available within Dengfeng City. Do bear in mind however, that the quality of care will be on a level you would expect in rural China. Travel and health insurance is an essential prerequisite for any travel within China.

Depending on how many people are enrolled at the time you wish to join, it is possible to train with us at the Temple for just one day while we are there. Please see our Itineraries page for more information.

If you have your own travel plans, and wish to meet us at Wangzhigou at the start of the course, that can be arranged. However, all multi-day program participants must be at Shaolin for the first day of the program. Please Contact Us to discuss those arrangements further.

.As we offer these programs to participants around the world, it is currently not possible for us to provide such package tours. But at CK Martial Hearts, we want to be able to provide you with the best experience possible. So if we can help in any way with suggestions or advice, please just ask. We are more than happy to help.

While others may take you to areas around the Shaolin Temple, to train at ‘associated’ schools, we are the only company that offers these unique experiences inside the genuine Shaolin Temple, with actual Shaolin warrior monks.

Plus, our multi-day programs include all travel between Beijing and Shaolin, all food, all accommodation, all training, a native English-speaking guide, and even clothes to train in, all for one price.

  1. I usually do not drop a lot of remarks, but after looking at
a lot of comments on FAQ – CK Martial Hearts.
I actually do have a couple of questions for you if you
do not mind. Is it simply me or do some of the responses appear
as if they are left by brain dead visitors? 😛 And,
if you are writing on additional online social sites, I’d like to follow anything fresh you have to post.
Could you list of every one of your shared sites like your linkedin profile, Facebook page or twitter feed?

Hi, i would be interested in trying the 10 day training at the shaolin temple. However, when i arrive in Beijing by plane, is there going to be someone to pick us up to go to the temple? Or do we have to go there by ourselves? How does this work? Thank you! Kind regards

Mathilde, many thanks for your enquiry! You’d be very welcome on one of our programs, the next of which is scheduled for May 2016.

As for your question, have no concerns on that front. If you wish, we can arrange pick up at Beijing Capital Airport, and delivery to your hotel. Next year, we are also going to be offering an extra program, that includes a two day visit to Beijing’s most interesting sites, before we head down to the Shaolin Temple.

For more information, please stay tuned to our blog, or email us your questions at [email protected]. We look forward to training with you soon!
